I did the FDI course in 2002, after it was recommended to me by a friend. I found the course immensely useful. I originally trained as a model maker and wanted to retrain so I could change my career to the Art department. Terry taught me the fundamentals and conventions of film draughtsmanship. The traditional techniques that he teaches mean that I had a good understanding of drawing plans, elevations and specific details like; doors, windows and stairs. I also learned how to annotate specifically for film sets. I found the after course care was amazing. Terry takes time for each and every student and encourages you to continue practicing. To help with this, his door is always open for ex students. You can pop in any time to show him your post-course drawings and get advice or direction. If there is a drawing board available he will allow you to revise your drawing in the drawing office at Pinewood.
Since the course, I have worked in the Art department for 14 years. Initially I started on a TV show called Planet Cook, where Terry was instrumental in suggesting me as the draughtsman for the show. I have subsequently worked in the Art Department on, Stardust, Moon, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallow, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Wrath Of The Titans, World War Z, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Robin Hood, Edge Of Tomorrow, Cinderella, The Force Awakens, and Rogue One among others.
Although my career is built from hard work and good focus. I would not have had the opportunities that FDI and Terry gave me. In all the art departments I have worked in, there has always been a good proportion of FDI graduates working with me. Some are now Senior Art Directors on big budget films.
In every persons career there are always key mentors and supporters along the way. For me Terry is one of these people and FDI was the start of a career I love.
